Greenfield Exports, LLC has proposed to construct a new grain transfer facility in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana. The project is subject to Federal Department of the Army permitting. As part of the permitting process, Greenfield has engaged a professional cultural resource firm to conduct a cultural resources investigation of the proposed area of potential effect for the project. The documents have been submitted to the Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for interagency consultation and federal review.
As part of the investigation, archaeologists conducted a search of previously conducted archaeological surveys within a 1-mile radius of the proposed survey area. This research identified ten archaeological investigations that had been conducted from 1984 to 2018 (listed in the table below), which are on file with the Louisiana Division of Archaeology.
In these past investigations and a currently ongoing investigation, no ancestral burial sites have been identified in the area that could be affected by this project. As noted, the proper documents have been submitted to the SHPO and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for interagency consultation and federal review. Greenfield will take all steps necessary to assure compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and permitting requirements.
This investigation is being performed by professional archaeologists meeting the qualifications set out by the federal government in the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards (Federal Register, Vol.48, No. 190, Thursday, September 29, 1983, pp. 44738 - 44739). This research is being conducted in accordance with the professional and ethical standards of the Register of Professional Archaeologists. The report will follow the Division of Archaeology and Historic Preservation September 2018 Report Standards for Cultural Resource Investigations as recommended by the Louisiana Office of Cultural Development.
